| The Story of Kids' Kitchen |
In the summer of 1996 a man named Elgin Jones had a dream of feeding hungry children. Elgin lives 2 blocks
away from the Mountain View Recreation Center which is located in one of the poorest neighborhoods in
Anchorage, Alaska.
He saw the hungry children in the neighborhood, and remembered his early childhood
in Detroit when people in his neighborhood always made sure the children had something to eat.
When his grandfather went fishing, he brought back fish for the family and the neighbors. So he decided to do
something about the situation he saw around him. In September of 1996 he founded the Kids' Kitchen at
the Mountain View Recreation Center. With help from volunteers and donations he started serving meals
to the children at the center.
The majority of these children come from low-income
families who have breakfast and lunch programs available at school.
But when the children come home some parents are unable to provide them with a nutritious dinner.
Elgin Jones has made it his mission in life to provide these children a wholesome nutritious meal at no cost. The meals served have come from
donations of food and money from private citizens, businesses, and organizations. You will see the schedule of meals
listed below and ways to help Kids' Kitchen through donations of food, money, or volunteering your time.

| Kids' Kitchen is staffed by a small core of volunteers who travel to the three recreation centers each day
to cook and serve the meals to the children. There are many volunteer opportunities available with Kids'
Kitchen if you would like to help out. You can contact Elgin Jones at 274-8522 or 529-7903 if you
are interested in a volunteer position. Also business, school, and church groups may sponsor and or volunteer to
serve a dinner at one of the recreation centers. This is a very worthwhile project if you are a teacher, scout leader,
youth group director, or a business looking to give something back to the community. |
