SCHOLARSHIPS APPLICATIONS

1. Xi Psi Omega Scholarship
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded at Howard University in Washington,
DC. Its purpose is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic achievement, exemplary character,
and promote community service. Xi Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
was chartered in Anchorage on October 21, 1983. For over twenty years the chapter has
implemented and participated in local community service programs, including providing
scholarships to local high school students.
1. Availability
One-time scholarships will be awarded. All scholarships awarded are for use in the following school
year. The deadline for requesting scholarship funds is December 31st of the award year. Applicants
not attending school the first semester must submit a letter requesting a delay of funds. Funds not
requested by December 31st of the award year will not be awarded.
2. Eligibility
Applicants must have a 2.5 or higher GPA; attend a local senior high school; and actively
participate in school and community activities. To qualify for scholarship funds, applicants must
provide evidence that they have been accepted into a two, three, or four-year College or university.
Recipients are not eligible to receive a scholarship if they accept a full tuition, room and board
scholarship, a three or four year ROTC scholarship, or a military academy appointment.
3. Selection Process
Incomplete applications will not be considered. The Selection Committee will be comprised of
members of Xi Psi Omega's Scholarship Committee. Scholarship awards will be made without
regard to race, religion, or gender. Selection will be based on the "whole person" concept.
Individual accomplishments and community service will be considered as well as scholastic
performance. All applications must be postmarked by March 30th. All decisions by the
scholarship committee are final.

2. Zella Boseman Memorial Scholarship
Xi Psi Omega Sorority is also involved with the Zella Boseman Memorial Scholarship. The purpose of the Zella Boseman Memorial Scholarship is to offer financial assistance for tuition and other educational expenses to full-time students who are formally admitted into a degree-seeking program at the University of Alaska Anchorage, with preference for minority students. This scholarship was established to honor Zella Louise Keller Boseman (March 4, 1948- May 13, 1981). Zella was an Assistant Director for the Alaska State Human Rights Commission. She was an active member of the Alaska Black Caucus, NAACP, Alaska Women?s Resource Center, and Displaced Homemaker Program. She owned a crafts business and was mother of three children. Her individual accomplishments as capable professional women, a loving single parent, a creative businesswoman, and a responsible community member are exemplary.
